Aerial surveillance by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones represents an opportunity in many areas such as security, telecoms, broadcasting, disaster response, the military and agriculture. However, the limited flight time of free-flying drones - average 30 minutes - makes their application in these domains very limited and a long-flying tethered-drone system is desirable in a number of situations. Prototyping work has already been carried out by Tethered Drones Systems Limited (TDS) and the University of Southampton to demonstrate the viability of using tethered drones for these applications. The new funding will establish a dedicated engineering team within TDS to develop the first commercially available version of the system. A number of beta-users for the company’s products have already been identified and, over the forthcoming months TDS will gather of tens of thousands of hours of live flying data which will allow the product offering to mature.
